Easy ways to conquer the dreaded closet organization for 2017

I don't know about you, but my closet is a mess...where's the floor...why can't I find anything?

If you have noticed all the hardware and big box stores are having sales on closet organization items.  So now's the time to organize the closet and save money in doing so, too.

First of all, I'll tell you what I did, and see if it works for you.

I emptied my closet to see what I had...whew...way tooo much stuff for sure...I put them in piles.

  • Doesn't fit anymore, out of style, don't want-put in a give away pile
  • trash-items that are stained beyond help or torn and can't be fixed
  • cleaners-that's obvious
  • to fix-may need a button, hem needs to be fixed-something that I can do by myself
  • all long sweaters in one pile
  • short sleeve in another
  • shoes
  • long pants
  • suit jackets and tunic tops
  • handbags
  • belts and scarves
  • 2 wash baskets, one for darks, one for lights

Then I assessed my closet...where can I get the most use of my closet.

I decided I would obtain optimal space putting items on the top and lower half of the closet; shelves in between them, longer items at the end, this way I can see everything at one time, color, style, season, etc.

I put all the:

  1.  long pants from waits on pant hangers, putting all same color together
  2.  next to them are the long tunic tops
  3.  next to them the suit jackets
  4. scarves and belts went on a hanger to save room, knotting them and letting them hang to see what tops and pants would coordinate
  5.  then I have two hanging spots; on the top and the bottom for sweaters on hangers, long at the top and short on the bottom, all colors together
  6.  the shoes take up the most room, so they are on a shoe rack on the back of the closet.
  7. hangbags go on the shelves
  8. wash baskets fit under the suit jackets and tunic tops

What I found out is that when I'm organized, it's so much quicker in the morning to put together an outfit and I know where to hang them when they are washed.

Believe it or not, it's not that hard to do by yourself.  The sorting part took the most time, having to try on clothes and choosing which pile to put them in.

Cost?  About $200 for the shelves from Lowe's

Time?  About a day to organize and a 1/2 day to put up the shelves, hangers, etc.

Best thing is:  I now have more space for more NEW items...but don't tell my husband...
